Palisades Emergency
Readiness Checklist

A simple, do-it-now checklist for Pacific Palisades households — wildfire, earthquake, and power outages. Work through it once, refresh each season, and keep it where everyone can see it.

1 · Set up alerts (do once)

  • Register for NotifyLA (City alerts)
  • Register for Alert LA County
  • Get the Watch Duty app
  • Find your evacuation zone (Genasys)
  • Save 911 & key numbers in your phone

2 · Pack a go-bag (keep by the door)

  • Water (1 gal/person/day × 3 days) + snacks
  • Medications + eyeglasses
  • Phone charger / power bank
  • Flashlight + batteries
  • N95 masks
  • Cash (small bills)
  • Copies of ID, insurance, deed (or a USB drive)
  • Sturdy shoes + a change of clothes
  • First-aid kit
  • Pet food, leash, carrier

3 · Harden your home (each season)

  • Clear roof & gutters of leaves/needles
  • Keep the first 5 ft clear of anything flammable
  • Maintain 100 ft of defensible space
  • Screen vents with ember-resistant mesh
  • Trim limbs off the roof & 10 ft from the chimney
  • Move cushions & patio items inside when fire nears

4 · Make a plan (as a household)

  • Pick TWO ways out of the neighborhood
  • Choose an out-of-area meeting place
  • Pick one out-of-state contact everyone calls
  • Plan for pets & anyone who needs help leaving
  • Practice it once a year

5 · Backup power (outages & PSPS)

  • Sign up for LADWP outage alerts
  • Backup power for medical devices
  • Keep the gas tank ≥ half (pumps fail)
  • Home battery + solar (e.g. Powerwall)
  • Portable power station for phones & fridge
  • Generator: run OUTSIDE only (CO kills)
  • Coolers + ice for fridge meds & food

6 · Earthquake readiness

  • Install an auto gas shut-off valve
  • Strap the water heater; anchor tall furniture
  • Store water: 1 gal/person/day × 2 weeks
  • Bucket-toilet kit: bags + kitty litter
  • Shoes & flashlight by every bed
  • Know your gas, water & electrical shut-offs
  • Get the MyShake early-warning app
  • Practice Drop, Cover, Hold On
