With the debris phase behind us, the Palisades is a construction zone — and vacant lots and half-built homes are targets for tool theft, material theft (lumber and copper especially), and trespassing. Here's how to protect your property until you're back in it.

Gates Security — local patrol & alarm response

Palisades-based private security firm (founded 2000) staffed with off-duty and retired police officers, running 24-hour dispatch, neighborhood patrol, and alarm/camera monitoring and response. Verify any guard company — CA BSIS license check

Every legitimate private patrol company in California must hold a Private Patrol Operator (PPO) license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Look up any company — including one your contractor proposes — before signing.

LAPD — report theft & suspicious activity

The Palisades is served by LAPD's West Los Angeles station — which sits across town, roughly 30 minutes away. That distance is exactly why most rebuilding owners layer private patrol on top: LAPD handles crimes and reports, but it can't be your first line of prevention. Still report every theft and trespass — reports are how LAPD justifies allocating patrols to the rebuild area. Non-emergency: 1-877-ASK-LAPD (1-877-275-5273). Crimes in progress: 911.

Site-hardening basics (ask your general contractor who's responsible for each):

Temporary fencing with locked gates — required and worth doing right.
Solar/battery cameras and motion lighting (no grid power needed on a bare lot).
Don't store copper wire, appliances, or lumber on site longer than needed — schedule deliveries close to install.
Photograph and log tools/materials; mark tools with your permit number.
Swap contact info with rebuilding neighbors — occupied-street eyes are the best patrol.
